Restoring Body & Mind: 6 Exercises and Practices Worth Trying

Exercise is often thought of as something that is vigorous and strenuous. But there are also many types of exercise that can be restorative!

Restorative exercise is any type of activity or practice that helps to relax the body and mind and can be beneficial for both physical and mental health. We recommend doing at least 1 - 2 restorative workouts or practices per week, in addition to regular exercise.

6 Exercises & Practices

  1. Yoga: Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation. It can help to improve flexibility, strength, and balance, as well as reduce stress and anxiety. We incorporate yoga into our Total Body Strength & Length and other classes.

  2. Pilates: Pilates is a low-impact exercise that focuses on strengthening the core muscles. It can help to improve posture, flexibility, and range of motion. Try our Pilates Strength class to learn some

  3. Tai chi: Tai chi is a Chinese martial art that combines slow, gentle movements with deep breathing. It can help to improve balance, flexibility, and coordination, as well as reduce stress and anxiety.

  4. Walking: Walking at any pace for any length is a simple but effective form of exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels. It can help to improve cardiovascular health, reduce stress, and boost mood.

  5. Massage: Massage is a hands-on therapy that can help to reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote relaxation. The use of a foam roller, tennis ball, or stick roller to massage your muscles is also wonderful for promoting blood circulation and restoration.

  6. Meditation: Meditation is a mind-body practice that involves focusing the mind on the present moment. It can help to reduce stress, improve sleep, and boost mood.

In addition to these specific exercises and practices, there are also many other activities that can be restorative, such as spending time in nature, listening to calming music, or taking a warm bath.

The best way to find the right restorative exercise or practice for you is to experiment and see what works best. There is no right or wrong answer, and what works for one person may not work for another. The important thing is to find something that you enjoy and that helps you to relax and de-stress!
